Alternate title: The Day Intervals Kicked My Ass.
I set out to do my intervals this morning. It was already well above 70 and uncomfortably humid when I started my run. The sun was above the trees and I could feel the air getting warmer and warmer....make that hotter.
My plan was 10 reps of 2 minutes at 8:00/mile and 1 minute of easy jogging. I was able to push through 6 reps. My heart rate peaked at 184 BPM during that rep and I couldn't get it to drop below 170 at an easy jog and I wasn't even going to consider walking. I was feeling really out of breath and a hair lightheaded, so I slowed the pace for the rest of the run and just jogged back to the car.
I don't know if it was the heat or the fact that I've not been running regularly but it seemed harder today than it should have. I'm sure it's a combination of the two. I think if I get back into a regular routine things will get better. I looked back at my last interval workout on 4/25 and I know I pushed myself just as hard that day, actually harder, and my maximum heart rate was only 181. Also, I completed the entire workout that day.
Today's stats: I did 3.62 miles in 32:53 for an average pace of 9:05/mile.
Next up: I hope to get a long run in on Saturday morning. My goal is six or seven easy miles before it gets above 80 degrees.
